The first thing Judge Sim Eun-seok says is that she hates juvenile offenders. I braced myself for ten episodes of a cold protagonist being softened and proven wrong, and that is not what this show does at all. It keeps her severity intact and builds cases around it until you understand exactly where that severity came from. Kim Hye-soo is extraordinary here. She barely raises her voice and the room still tilts toward her every time she speaks. Kim Mu-yeol as Cha Tae-ju is the warmer counterweight, but the writing never reduces him to a naive foil, and the two senior judges played by Lee Sung-min and Lee Jung-eun are given real arguments instead of easy villainy. What stayed with me is that almost every case ends without a clean answer. A child is punished and nothing is fixed, or a child is spared and nothing is fixed either. I finished it across two nights and then carried it around for a week.
