I went in expecting a detective and a suspect falling into bed, and instead got two people falling into each other's language. Detective Hae-joon stakes out Seo-rae's apartment night after night, and what grows between them is made of interrogation transcripts, translated phone messages and the small courtesy of bringing someone dinner. It is the least physical love story I have seen in years and easily the most charged. Park Hae-il plays a man whose entire pride is in being upright, and you watch that uprightness rot in slow motion. Tang Wei is doing something I still cannot fully explain, acting in a second language on purpose, letting the slight formality of her Korean make every sentence sound like it could mean two things. When she says the word finally, the whole film reorganizes itself around it. The last stretch by the sea wrecked me. I rewatched it a week later just to catch what I had missed, and the second time through I was not watching a mystery at all.
