RAPSORI (2020)

While we often associate the roots of Korean Pansori with the Jeolla region, renowned singers like Lee Dong-baek and Kim Chang-ryong made their names in Seocheon, Chungcheong Province, in the early 20th century. How is the legacy of Pansori being carried on here today? The film, borrowing the format of a feature film, captures not only the Changgeuk troupe members and villagers who take pride in Seocheon's Pansori history but also teenage aspiring singers training to become masters. At its center is a man, a former rapper, who now photographs and records sounds. He coincidentally meets a teenage singer in Seocheon, embarking on a Pansori journey. The film, sparked by an interest in Pansori, culminates, as its title suggests, in moments of exhilaration where rap and Pansori blend as if in conversation, blurring the lines between past and present, East and West.
