Born between my paternal grandfather, who was a Korean soldier, and my maternal grandfather, who was a People's Army soldier, during the Korean War, I still live in the south of the still-divided Korean Peninsula. On a warm spring day, I witnessed the death of one of my roots. The death of my maternal grandfather, which I witnessed in childhood, continues to pose painful questions to me as an adult. Why did my grandfather make that choice that day?
