The film begins with slides showing an emblematic slum in Seoul just before demolition, during the demolition process, and after. It introduces a family encountered there. The grandmother works public jobs, the son is a daily construction worker, the eldest grandson works as a jeweler in Euljiro but dreams of becoming a preacher, the second grandson is a waiter at a Chinese restaurant who says he has no dreams. The granddaughter, Eun-ju, who had another child because she didn't have money for an abortion, moves into a rental apartment in Sanggye-dong after the demolition.
