I was always ashamed of my father. Because he took his own life at the age of six, I had to lie constantly. Moreover, I was my father's illegitimate child. However, perhaps because of that, I could never show my true self to people, and I always felt like I was standing on the edge. One day, an old man's face came to mind. That old man's name was Nochon Yi Gu-yeong. Mr. Nochon Yi Gu-yeong was a descendant of a noble family from the Joseon era, participated in the socialist independence movement during the Japanese colonial period, crossed to the North, and then descended as a spy, where he was soon captured. After 22 years in prison, he was released, founded a Chinese language school called Imunhak, and taught disciples. While living with his family in the South, he longed for his family in the North. Mr. Nochon traveled to China with the help of his disciples to meet his family in the North, but ultimately could not meet them and returned. Ten months later, Mr. Nochon passed away at the age of 87. Director's Intent: There was always something heavy in my chest. Because it was always there, I didn't realize its weight at first. But as that weight became heavier and heavier, I started to avoid the problem. However, from a certain day, I couldn't understand why the face of Mr. Nochon, whom I had once met, could not be forgotten. Moreover, Mr. Nochon's appearance in his later years was calm. He spoke in a low voice, almost inaudible. Especially, he kept his distance from me, making it difficult for me to approach. During filming, I couldn't even capture a single decisive moment as a documentary. In this work, I wanted to capture the inner world of Mr. Nochon in his later years, standing on the border between two families, the South and the North, socialism and Chinese scholarship, conversion and non-conversion, unable to move forward or backward. However, my intention was not artistically successful. Instead, I realized that Mr. Nochon and I were similar, both living a life on the edge.
