Manseok, who lived in poverty in a poor mountain neighborhood in Seoul, moves to the countryside with his grandfather. In the countryside, Manseok befriends a poor girl named Ok-ye. Manseok also helps his grandfather in the blacksmith shop and forms a group called "Sunflower," taking the initiative in rural service. In a countryside where young people are leaving for the city and labor is scarce, the "Sunflower" group launches a letter-writing campaign to find a way back home. When Chuseok arrives, Manseok's parents also return to their hometown, but the grandfather dies of his chronic illness. Manseok's father inherits his grandfather's blacksmith shop, settles in his hometown, and the village regains its vitality.
