The 70-year history of modern South Korea has been a saga of martial law and citizen resistance. From the establishment of the first government in 1948 to 2024, South Korea has declared martial law a total of 16 times. Each time, the constitution was shaken, citizens' freedoms were suppressed, and power fell under the boot of the military. However, in every dark moment, citizens took to the streets.
