The young man Lee Soo-il, tormented by the gap between reality and ideal, seeks an escape from his suffering by self-abuse in a semi-sleep state. Soon-ae, whom he loves, is also a sick soul yearning for salvation from loneliness. One day, Soon-ae decides to marry a wealthy stranger as a means to escape her torments. Upon learning this, Lee Soo-il also promises marriage to an unknown woman he met by chance on the street. The tragic end comes to Soon-ae in the form of deeper loneliness born from compromise with reality, and to Lee Soo-il, it comes in the form of death.
