Twenty years after leaving for Manchuria with the courtesan Hong-do, Geung-je returns to his wife and vows to become a good husband. Their son, Bong-gu, is seeing the daughter of a courtesan Geung-je once knew, but his parents convince him to marry Ok-sun instead. When Bong-gu's biological mother, Eun-sim, appears, Bong-gu says goodbye to her and returns to his mother's side, only to flee to Manchuria to avoid conscription, where he is arrested by the Japanese and taken to Siberia. Upon hearing this news, Geung-je, hovering between life and death, breathes his last in his wife's arms while calling out Eun-sim's name.
