The physical education teacher suggests that only Yukyeong should participate in the preliminary tournament. With a complex mix of inferiority, resentment, and the feeling that she can't go on, Haein deliberately falls during a practice race with Yukyeong. “What’s so easy? Do you enjoy running?” No one truly understands the reason behind Haein's fall or her complex feelings, and she becomes increasingly consumed by her inferiority. This feeling of inferiority is directed entirely at Yukyeong, the top-ranked runner and Haein's only friend on the team, leading Haein to steal Yukyeong's shoelaces. “Why are you you and I am me! What if I did it!” The inferiority that stemmed from never being able to be 'you,' the inferiority born from wanting to do well but being unable to, finally explodes towards Yukyeong. Only after the explosion does Haein finally reflect on her own feelings.
