Young-seol, a musician who returned from Tokyo, still cannot forget her former lover Hye-ryeon from twenty years ago. One day, drunk, Young-seol jumps in front of a car intending to commit suicide, but Hye-ryeon and Myung-hee, Hye-ryeon's sister-in-law, are in that car. Myung-hee takes Young-seol to the hospital run by her husband. During her hospitalization, Young-seol grows close to Jin-soo, Hye-ryeon's daughter. However, Hye-ryeon, who still harbors resentment towards Young-seol for abandoning her twenty years ago, visits Young-seol and asks her not to get too close to Jin-soo. As a result, Young-seol and Hye-ryeon reunite after twenty years. Twenty years ago, Young-seol was engaged to the daughter of a wealthy family and went to study in Tokyo. Later, Hye-ryeon married Myung-gu, Young-seol's friend. However, Myung-gu defected to the North, leaving Hye-ryeon alone. Upon learning this, Young-seol proposes to Hye-ryeon upon their reunion. Jin-soo, upon learning of the relationship between Young-seol and Hye-ryeon, fiercely criticizes her mother. Hye-ryeon, suffering from a heart valve condition and at risk of dying at any moment if shocked, cannot withstand her daughter's criticism and passes away. Young-seol blames Jin-soo for Hye-ryeon's death, but through Hye-ryeon's will, she learns that Jin-soo is her own daughter.
