Choi Seon-ae's life is arduous, as her husband was abducted to North Korea during the Korean War, and she lives relying on her young son. She tries to find solace in the 'canary' in her womb, but numerous tempting hands reach out to her. She rejects the temptations from the group of widows, including the dandy Oh Young-hwa, Kang Gwi-soon, Lee Kyung-hye, Hong Eun-joo, and Kim Jin-ok, and does not get swept up in that atmosphere. However, she develops an emotional connection with doctor Yoon Man-ho. Kang Gwi-soon, pregnant, dies, and Yoon Man-ho goes abroad. Seon-ae ultimately rejects all temptations and waits only for the day her abducted husband will return.
