Seok and Sun-i, who grew up in the same village, are lovers. However, because Sun-i is the daughter of a poor tenant farmer, Seok's parents do not like her. In the village, Park Man-young (Choi Nam-hyun), who was once a scholar, has been seriously ill for a long time. Seok, who had studied under Park Man-young along with his son In-dal, visits the sick man with his father. However, the doctor prescribes that the man's cold lower body must be warmed by the body heat of a young girl. The village discusses how to revive Park Man-young, and at the strong insistence of Seok's father, who had long worried about the close relationship between Sun-i and his son Seok, it is decided to send Sun-i as a concubine to Park Man-young. Seok's parents send Seok on an errand to his maternal family. The next day, Sun-i, without a groom or procession, rides alone in a palanquin and is sent to Park Man-young. Upon returning from his mother's house, Seok writhes and curses everyone. Unable to forget Sun-i, Seok gets money from his mother to go study in Seoul, then secretly summons Sun-i. Seok takes the unsuspecting Sun-i and flees immediately. They settle in a fishing village and live by selling fish. Meanwhile, Park Man-young dies, and In-dal, Park Man-young's son, vows to avenge his father and sets out in search of Seok. Seok is captured by In-dal, beaten, and then placed on an empty boat that drifts out to sea. Sun-i, who was waiting for Seok, comes down to the beach. Learning that the baby died and that Seok was carried out to sea on an unmanned boat, Sun-i throws herself from the cliff into the sea, following her beloved Seok.
