Second Sex (1989)

Winner of Best Picture at the 35th Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Lee Soo, a 37-year-old Korean literature professor, cannot forget her first love, Joon Ho, who went missing during the Vietnam War 15 years ago. One day, she meets Hyun Woo, who strongly resembles Joon Ho, and finds herself torn between the past and the present. Hyun Woo, obsessed with the past, tracks Lee Soo, who lives a bizarre day-and-night life, and discovers that her wounds originated from the Vietnam War. Feeling pity for Lee Soo, Hyun Woo falls in love with her despite being her student, and confesses his love during a trip to Busan. However, he realizes that all Lee Soo desires is Joon Ho. Min Chul, who served with Joon Ho in the war and later sold Joon Ho's belongings to Lee Soo at a high price, tells Lee Soo that Joon Ho died tragically, burned to death. Following this, the two fight violently, and Min Chul commits suicide. Lee Soo is also found dead, drowned in the university swimming pool.
