Just before the armistice, Army Captain Kim Cheol-ho escapes from a North Korean prisoner-of-war camp and receives help from a pastor and his daughter, Sook-kyung, in the village of Wolgok. The pastor is arrested for hiding him, and Sook-kyung helps Cheol-ho flee to the mountains. He joins a guerrilla unit and asks to stay to rescue his benefactors. The unit, plagued by a spy, eventually identifies the traitor thanks to the female commander, clearing Cheol-ho's name. Cheol-ho is captured while attempting to rescue the pastor and his daughter, but is freed by the guerrillas, who infiltrate disguised as North Korean security agents. The unit plans to blow up an ammunition depot and attack the POW camp, appointing Cheol-ho as an operations officer. After a fierce battle, they successfully liberate the prisoners and, despite many hardships, reach the land of freedom.
