To protect Josef's talent, Berth carefully preserves his remaining manuscripts. World War II begins with Germany's occupation of Czechoslovakia. Berth parts ways with his lover, Marie, promising to meet again someday, and hands over Josef's manuscripts. Amidst fleeing, Marie lives by keeping her promise to Berth, fixated on the manuscripts. Marie's daughter, Hof, tries to escape the reality filled with the sound of gunfire, beside her mother who only looks at the manuscripts. Kadl appears before Hof as she searches for a new life; he was a ray of light in Hof's life. And after a long wandering, the manuscripts are placed before Hof once again in middle age. What did the 'manuscripts' truly mean to Hof?
