I watched this because of the two names on the poster, and in that regard, the show didn't disappoint. Gianna Jun plays the mermaid Shim Cheong, who steps onto land for the first time; she's naive but not stupid, and every time she eats something or says something wrong, I laugh out loud. Lee Min-ho plays the con artist Heo Joon-jae, who has a silver tongue but eyes that always seem a bit weary—he fits the role better than I expected. Lee Hee-jun and the group of con artists feel like a little family, which is very pleasant to watch. The setting is beautiful, and the love story connecting the Joseon era to the present is romantic enough. However, past the halfway point, I started to feel like I'd seen it all before. Past lives, destiny, lovers across two eras—anyone who has watched this screenwriter's previous work will immediately recognize the formula. The major plot twist is resolved quite early, after which the back-and-forth becomes predictable, and the middle episodes just kind of drift along. By the end, the show breaks its own established rules to get the ending it wants, which made me feel a bit disappointed given the elaborate setup at the beginning. If you just need a beautiful show with stars to watch for fun, this is a good choice. But if you're waiting for a new kind of story, this might not be it.
