This was one of the first K-dramas of my life, and I was afraid to rewatch it. I did. Cha Song Ju and Han Jeong Seo, separated in childhood, find each other again, only for her to lose her memory, and it all starts over. Kwon Sang-woo acts in a way that his despair is physically felt through the screen, and Choi Ji-woo still knows how to cry without a single unnecessary movement. The music starts, and I am already back in 2003. Shin Hyun-jun as Han Tae Hwa still seems to me the most honest character in this story. And a very young Kim Tae-hee as Han Yu Ri is truly terrifying. But that is exactly where I stumbled. The stepmother and stepsister here do things that, at some point, make you stop believing and just start counting how many more misfortunes can fall upon one girl. This is makjang (a genre known for over-the-top plot twists) in its purest form; every turn is guessed in advance, and by the middle, I was already tired of the tears they were wringing out of me. And yet, I watched it to the end and cried at the finale. It is a classic that you return to not for the plot, but for the sake of who you were when you watched it for the first time.
