Honestly, my expectations weren't high when I pressed the play button. A Korean-style superpower show? I wondered what else they could show us after 'Moving'. But I ended up binge-watching all 8 episodes in one day, and as soon as I finished, I started episode 1 all over again. Set at the end of the century in 1999, the most unremarkable people in the neighborhood somehow gain superpowers. The genius part of this premise is that it happens to be them. They aren't grand heroes; they're people living paycheck to paycheck, neighborhood aunties, unemployed folks, and clumsy young men. That's why the action in this drama is funny before it's cool, and after it's funny, it suddenly becomes touching. Park Eun-bin has refreshed her career once again here. The actor who created a syndrome with 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' doesn't get trapped in that image; she completely makes this sly, physically active character her own. There's a clear difference in the atmosphere when Eun Chae-ni is on screen versus when she isn't. I also think Cha Eun-woo shows something more than just being a "handsome actor" for the first time in this project. And Choi Dae-hoon—the screen comes alive every time this guy appears. Not to mention the density provided by supporting actors like Kim Hae-sook and Son Hyun-joo. Director Yoo In-shik pushes what he already proved in 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' even further here. He uses fantasy settings but never loses sight of the characters' emotions. The scenes showing what the characters have to endure because of their powers stay with me much longer than the episodes with flashy superpower CGI. The 8-episode length was also perfect. There isn't a single dragging episode, and every time an episode ends, it makes it impossible not to watch the next one. There's a reason it hit #1 on Netflix on its first day and has maintained its popularity since. It's the best Korean drama I've seen this year. No, it's one of the best in the last few years combined. If you haven't watched it yet, clear your schedule for tonight.
